A brain dump only works if capturing is faster than the thought is fleeting. Here's how to do one that leaves your mind genuinely quiet.

Why brain dumps fail

Most brain dumps stall because capture is slow. If getting a thought down means choosing a project, a tag, and a due date, you'll stop after five items — right when the useful stuff was surfacing. The mind only empties if the exit is frictionless.

Dump first, sort later

Separate capture from organizing. In the dump phase, write everything with zero structure: worries, tasks, half-ideas, all of it. Judging or filing as you go kills the flow. Get it all out, then sort in a second pass when your head is already lighter.

A tool built for the dump

Axtio's capture is deliberately five seconds: press N, type, hit Enter, repeat. No fields to fill, so nothing interrupts the flush. Once your head is empty, you drag each captured item into the right project and court. Capture stays fast; organizing happens when it's convenient.

Do it whenever the pressure builds

A brain dump isn't a once-a-year event. Any time your head feels crowded, dump it. The relief is immediate, and the habit keeps your working memory free for thinking instead of remembering.
