Data Freedom: Why We Built the JSON Export Feature
Most SaaS companies view your data as "engagement." We view it as your property. And we believe you should be able to take it with you whenever you want.
Vendor lock-in is the dark side of the modern web. Companies make it incredibly easy to get your data into their system, but almost impossible to get it out. They use proprietary formats, hidden export menus, and "data silos" to keep you trapped in their ecosystem. If you decide to switch tools, you are faced with the prospect of losing years of history or manually copying and pasting thousands of items. We think this is unethical.
The JSON Standard
When we built Axtio, one of our first technical decisions was to support a one-click JSON export. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the universal language of the web. It is readable by humans and machines alike. By exporting your data in this format, we ensure that you are never "locked in" to Axtio. You can take your JSON file and import it into a spreadsheet, a database, or even a rival productivity tool.
Sovereignty is the Best Feature
We believe that the best way to keep customers is by providing value, not by holding their data hostage. By giving you total freedom to leave, we force ourselves to keep making Axtio better every single day. If we stop providing a great experience, you should leave. And you should be able to take your projects, your cards, and your history with you. This is what true digital sovereignty looks like.
Privacy and Portability
Data freedom also means privacy. Because Axtio is local-first, your primary export isn't from our servers—it's from your own browser. You don't have to wait for an email with a zip file. You just hit export, and the file is on your hard drive instantly. This portability ensures that you have a permanent backup of your work that is independent of any internet connection or cloud service.
We built Axtio for people who value their independence. Your work belongs to you. We are just providing the grid to help you visualize it.
